It's instructions are to prove the Z (in) is purely resistive for the circuit shown. Based on the fact that R=8 ohms and L =400uH, I have calculated C to be 6.25uF. WebResistors are most often used in "padding" a tweeter which is more efficient than the woofer, so the overall system frequency response will be flat. The resistor, in series or parallel with capacitors and/or inductors, is often used as part of a Zobel or impedance compensation network. A good Meter is the best way to "Trust, but verify"

http://leachlegacy.ece.gatech.edu/papers/zobel/zobel.pdf WebOtto Julius Zobel (October 20, 1887 – January 1970) was an electrical engineer who worked for the American Telephone & Telegraph Company (AT&T) in the early part of the 20th century. Zobel's work on filter design was revolutionary and led, in conjunction with the work of John R. Carson, to significant commercial advances for AT&T in the field of frequency …
WebJan 17, 2010 · With a Zobel of 10 Ohms in series with 0.68 uFd connected across the tweeter terminals the inductance cancels out nicely. I made plots of the response of the high channel output of my ES5800 network loaded by the CT125 tweeter with and without the Zobel connected. There’s a rise of about 4 dB at 20 Khz withOUT the Zobel.

The cause of this impedance rise is due to the speaker's voice coil inductance (Le). The calculated inductor is 0.21 mH for 4.5 kHz cutoff frequency. The Scan Speak woofer has a DC resistance of 5.5 ohms, and a voice coil inductance of .1mH, so we need a .0001 / 5.52 = 3.3µF capacitor and a 5.5 ohm resistor for the Zobel network. The formulas are R= 1.25 x Re in ohms, C= (Le x 10^3)/ R^2 in microFarads. R in the latter equation is taken from the result of the first equation.
