WebCometary nuclei are small solid bodies, typically only a few kilometres in diameter and composed of roughly equal parts of volatile ices, fine silicate dust, and organic materials. The ices are dominated by water ice (about 80 percent of the total ices) but also include carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, formaldehyde, and methanol. The nucleus is the solid, central part of a comet, once termed a dirty snowball or an icy dirtball. A cometary nucleus is composed of rock, dust, and frozen gases.
