WebI only do it on really messed up boards (no oil at all, was all gunky, really dry) and it helps the wood out a lot. You'd be just fine using mineral oil as well, I use Howard's lemon oil as it's mineral oil based from what I can tell. A little goes a very long way with both products, no need to douse the wood in oil or the feed n' wax.
